"Legacies" by Nathan Daughtey, Wind Band Orchestration by Christopher M. Nelson
"Legacies" was commissioned by the North Carolina Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society, and is a tribute Lynn Glassock, one of the composer's very first compositional influences. Dr. Nathan Daughtrey scored it for percussion ensemble (10 players), and it was released in 2012. In 2014, I completed a wind band orchestration of the piece. Nathan gave valuable input throughout, and the orchestration strives to maintain the original drive, sparkle, vigor, and wonder of the piece, while utilizing unique scoring and wind techniques. The wind band orchestration received its world premiere with the Washington State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under my baton in the Spring of 2015.
"Wayfaring Stranger" by Christopher M. Nelson
An arrangement and imaginative setting of the folk tune "Poor Wayfaring Stranger", this piece was written for Dr. Danh T. Pham, and the Washington State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Utilizing earthy woodwinds, marimba, and distant chimes, a sense of wandering and distance is conveyed. Solo Euphonium and Piccolo are employed, and the piece culminates in a full, lush, "Alleluia" section before drifting off at its end. The piece was premiered on October 9th, 2014 on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, WA, with Dr. Pham conducting. Recording by the Musashino Academia Musicae Wind Ensmemble, conducted by Mr. Ray Cramer. Parts and scores are available from C. Alan Publications.
