Brothers, we must part (2021)
The tune "Land on the Shore" was often used a benediction at religious camp meetings held in the American Northeast during the early 1800s. The lyrics speak of holding on to companions in one's heart, although a time of parting had arrived. The refrain expresses confidence that "we will land on shore," despite momentary separation. In the Spring of 2021, Donald Peterson and Kirt Saville both retired from their positions as the Director and Associate Director of Bands (respectively) at Brigham Young University. As a retirement gift, this piece was written for them to perform at their final concerts as conductors at BYU. The brief clarinet and trumpet solos at the close of the piece subtly reflect Don (a trumpet player) and Kirt (a clarinetist) in their final days as directors at BYU. Their mentorship, steadiness, artistry, and wisdom have impacted generations of musicians, and while we look forward to future interactions, we also are briefly saddened at this time of parting.
